I have a hard time with comedy movies. My problem is most of them aren’t funny to me. It’s like the sitcoms that have laugh tracks. I’ll watch them, a “joke” is told, the “audience” cracks up, and I’m just sitting there thinking “why was that funny?” Well in new comedy movies, there aren’t laugh tracks but most of the jokes just aren’t funny to me and I react similarly.

With all that being said, I gave Game Night a try. Jason Bateman & Rachel McAdams host a weekly game night because they’re super competitive. Bateman’s older, more successful brother introduces his own game night and stages a kidnapping. The revamped game night turns into a competition to find the kidnapped victim.

Lots of lame jokes, some of them land, most of them are as good as the sitcom jokes. The best part of the movie was the police officer neighbor played by Jesse Plemons. He just wanted to be involved with game night but they actually went out of their way to avoid inviting him.

The plot was engaging enough, I stuck with it to see how it all played out. The talented cast made it a little better than the typical comedy but in the end I just wasn’t that impressed. Check it out as a rental or catch it on TV.
