Movie Reviews: Blockers, Tomb Raider, Rampage, Super Troopers 2, Isle of DogsMay 3, 2018
I haven’t been uploading reviews lately (I blame the game God of War for that), but I have been seeing some movies here and there. Here are some short & quick reviews of the latest movies I’ve seen along with their ratings. Enjoy!
When I reviewed Game Night, I said I dislike most comedies. Well, this is that typical comedy I’m usually not fond of. A few mildly funny parts scattered through an otherwise boring movie just doesn’t do it for me. If you’ve seen the preview, you’ve seen almost every worthy comedy moment already. One of the three daughters is gay but no one knows, so you get to watch that all unfold. The other two are straight but one is a tomboy- so, there you have it.

Bonus review from @NMuldoon:
Honestly kinda love this movie – the politics are so progressive without being overbearing, the film has so many great performances and jokes. And it’s such a good coming-of-age comedy (4/5 stars)
Tomb Raider (2018)
Video game movie of a video game that was already made into movies. Recently though, the game itself got rebooted into much better & more polished games. So the reboot is also improved (a little). Ultimately the movie is forgettable, but you can’t help but root for Lara played by Alicia Vikander who does a good job in the role.
Tomb Raider gets 2.8 N2M Guys out of 5
Another video game movie nobody asked for starring Dwayne Johnson. The plot is nonsensical, the acting subpar, and the humor is sparse. The Rock does ok with what he has, but everyone else phones this in. Jeffrey Dean Morgan seemingly came directly from the set of The Walking Dead still playing Negan, but in a really crappy suit. Some CGI moments when all the monsters are in the city destroying stuff are cool to look at, but it is definitely not worth the hour & thirty minute build-up, or the ticket price to see it.
Rampage gets 2.3 N2M Guys out of 5
Super Troopers 2 (2018)
Director: Jay Chandrasekhar | Writers: Broken Lizard | Starring: Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, Erik Stolhanske, Brian Cox, Rob Lowe, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Hayes MacArthur, Tyler Labine, Will Sasso
What I said about comedies comes two-fold on comedy sequels. They almost always suck and are almost always just a cash grab. That being said, with Super Troopers 2, they did a good job. They brought back the original cast and came up with a good enough plot to set up a lot of funny moments (and they weren’t all in the preview). If you liked the first one, you’ll like the second. If you laugh at Canadian accents (and I do), you’ll love this movie.

Isle of Dogs (2018)
Director: Wes Anderson | Writers: Wes Anderson, Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman, Kunichi Nomura | Starring: Bryan Cranston, Koyu Rankin, Edward Norton, Bob Balaban, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, Kunichi Nomura, Akira Takayama, Greta Gerwig, Frances McDormand, Akira Ito, Scarlett Johansson, Harvey Keitel, F. Murray Abraham, Yoko Ono, Tilda Swinton, Liev Schreiber
A new stop motion Wes Anderson film. Listen- if you don’t like Wes Anderson, don’t watch the movie. It’s not going to change your mind about him. Dogs have become exiled to a trash island off the coast of Japan because of a sickness they all have. The son of the mayor flies himself and crash lands onto the island to save his dog. We know all this from the preview. I thought it would be a fun quirky movie like all of Wes’ films. I just got bored, looking at my watch by the end. I wanted to like this movie, I really did. I really like his movies. The stop motion was beautiful but the plot was so-so. I know people who loved it so maybe it’s just not for me. Like PV says- “It was the most okayest movie of the year!”
