Not Too Much Movie Review: Captain Marvel (2019)March 11, 2019
Directors: Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck
Stars: Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson
I complained 3 months ago about Aquaman.
This was every bit as bad.
I’m bummed too – I absolutely love Brie Larson, I love Ryan Fleck & Anna Boden. I even thought the whole 90s thing could give it potential to be something light and fun.
It’s just boring. It’s not supremely terrible or anything, it’s just the most completely average bland movie imaginable. It’s weirdly just bad at everything it does – it’s not silly enough given all the elements at play and yet its characters feel one-dimensional and the dramatic moments lack heft. The comedy is almost always a failure and the musical cues are every bit as awful as Aquaman’s.
If there’s one good thing about it- it’s that Stan Lee’s cameo is a reference to his first ever film cameo, and I don’t mean Spider-Man (2002).
But man, what a total failure. And given how bad the red pill woman hating trolls want it to fail- it makes it even worse that it does. But I can’t pretend it’s a better movie than it is as a result, because at the end of the day whatever culture war is happening, this is just a movie, and not a very good one.
